For Emma, Forever Ago

So this is supposed to be my first article for this thing called Alisonsmusicview. I don’t know what this whole thing is going to be. Is it a blog, or rather something like a diary? I will figure it out in about some weeks probably, or maybe I won’t. This isn’t supposed to be something to take too seriously. And anyway, here I am, just another person writing about music he/she enjoys.

I had a hard time choosing the first album I want to write about. The question was: Which all-time favorite should I take? Eventually, I didn’t take one of these. I decided to write about the album I’m listening at this moment right now. It’s the one that currently holds my back.
For Emma, Forever Ago is the debut release by the band Bon Iver. It came out in 2007 and was recorded in an isolated hunting cabin. Today it’s considered to be one of the most important albums in the modern indie-folk genre. The lyrical themes of the record include lost love and mediocrity. Not quite the feel-good hit of the summer record. Rather a leave me alone in the cold dark winter record.

The mood on this album is a mix of gloom and melancholy. The production is pretty raw, you can hear background noises that make it a special listen. The instruments sound so real, with no distortion, and no effects. Vernon’s falsetto voice makes it even harder not to feel sad. I like the whole album, but the beginning stands out. After listening to the first song Flume, you maybe get an idea of where it could go. Lump Song and Skinny Love are also beautiful arrangements. I kind of like the idea of listening to that on a road trip. Driving towards your destiny. My favorite song on the record is For Emma. The combination of the trumpets and the soaring guitar is simply beautiful.

Well, I think that’s it for the first album. Yeah, don’t take it too seriously, I shouldn’t either.
