Turn On the Bright Lights

Oh it’s up to me now, turn on the bright lights!

“Turn On The Bright Lights” sounds less like the States and a lot like Great Britain. But above all, the record sounds so wonderfully unagitated. The songs are driven by their harmonies. And yet Interpol don’t produce unstructured sounds. Maybe not as dark, but certain passages on the album bring Joy Divisions suffering mood to mind.

TOTBL begins with a wide-ranging, echoing, crystal-clear guitar figure that seems to come out of nowhere. Even though I listened to this song countless times, that baseline still grooves its way into my heart. The vocals appear only for a short time, creating a magical atmosphere. The following songs are characterised by louder riffs and faster paths. Not only though, Hands Away is a slow song, with a very beautiful violine texture. The final, frenetic two minutes of “PDA” in particular are stunning (please listen to that), with the guitars interweaving whilst Sam Fogarino pounds away on the drums like his life depends on it. Paul’s voice is beautifully sloppy, a little muzzy. The lyrics are about life, love, future, past and expansion of consciousness. It fits wonderfully with the mood of the music. Also Han

Interpol has many things that could make a great band. High independence in singing and songwriting, interesting ideas and authenticity. Not at all overproduced, just brilliantly performed. Especially the spherical guitars and the bass stands out in this band. I adore this record!
