Slowdive

A shimmering soundtrack gazing into the vast expanse of the cosmos.

The music that Slowdive embraces is like a mix of different nature occurrences: Storms, clouds, skies and oceans crushing together. It combines swirling vocals with layers of distorted guitars accompanied by synths, creating a wash sound to a point where no instrument is distinguishable from another.

Slowdive sound amazingly fresh and straightforward on their latest album. It all starts with ambient synths, a clean guitar and delayed drums coming in. You can imagine that they are all closing their eyes while singing these lines. The record features songs with various moods, that show us that even the darkest clouds dissolve and make the clear sky visible.

The band may have invested a little less on the guitar pedals, that probably makes it sound less dense than the other albums. Modern digital production technology makes their sound crystal clear, at least for shoegaze standards. After seven tracks, the album ends with a long ballad. Piano driven, sad lyrics and atmospheric background sound. Just how they are supposed to finish a record.

Slowdive released their self-titled comeback album in 2017. It seems like they have never lost their strength. The English band previously only released 3 albums in the nineties. One of them, Souvlaki, became a classic in the shoegaze movement and is probably a must-have record for all rock enthusiasts out there. Even after 22 years, they came back together for good. They created a powerful record, a defining moment in the band’s career that will not be forgotten soon.
